Als je ooit hebt gezien hoe je kind moeite had om te verwoorden wat het weet, je te vertellen over zijn of haar dag, sociale signalen te begrijpen of contact te leggen met anderen – en je je hebt afgevraagd waarom de gebruikelijke communicatiestrategieën niet werken – dan ben je niet de enige.

Ik ben Eloise, communicatiespecialist voor mensen met autisme en oprichtster van LiveWyre Learning. Ik heb meer dan 15 jaar ervaring in het ondersteunen van autistische kinderen, tieners en hun families. Ik ben zelf ook ouder van een kind met aanzienlijke communicatieproblemen. Ondanks mijn professionele ervaring had ik zelf ook begeleiding, mentorschap en ondersteuning nodig om de juiste omgeving voor mijn eigen kind te creëren. Ik begrijp de onzekerheid, het voortdurende zoeken naar oplossingen en de diepe wens om te weten dat je je kind de ondersteuning geeft die het echt nodig heeft.
Die ervaring heeft iets bevestigd waar ik altijd al in geloofde: communicatie bij autisme gaat over veel meer dan een kind leren wat het moet zeggen.
Een autistisch kind kent misschien wel de woorden, maar vindt het toch moeilijk om zijn of haar gedachten te ordenen, belangrijke sociale informatie te herkennen, zich in het perspectief van een ander te verplaatsen of flexibel met taal om te gaan tijdens een echt gesprek. Wanneer we ons alleen richten op aangeleerde sociale scripts, missen we mogelijk de denkvaardigheden die communicatie betekenisvol en steeds zelfstandiger maken.

I’m Eloise, an autism communication specialist and the founder of LiveWyre Learning. I have more than 15 years of experience supporting autistic children, teenagers and their families. Before starting my own practice, I worked as a Director of Instruction, helping learners strengthen the cognitive foundations connected to language, comprehension and communication.
But this work is personal for me, too.
I am also the parent of a child who has experienced significant communication challenges.
