Commemorate in wood

When I started my Etsy shop in 2013 I listed a wide variety of woodturning products that I design and create on my lathe. The most special of the unique products I make with my own hands are wooden urns. It is a great honor for me when someone chooses a beautiful and unique, commemorative urn that I have created for a loved one. Often, I am deeply moved by the reactions of customers when they receive the urn. So designing and making urns is what I focus on.

When I select wood to design and create with, I look for hidden beauty inside a tree. Usually that means parts inside the tree where something exciting happens. The hidden beauty can be found at an interesting grain at a branch division, at an old scar in the tree, or even by a special figuration caused by the natural reaction of a tree when it is invaded by insects. One of my favorites is spalted wood, with its beautiful and colorful graphic patterns.

I take great care to pack your precious item well to ensure it will arrive at your home in perfect condition.
I am fortunate to be able to create wood turning products through my Martin Wooden Urns business. I take much pride in being able to make works of art that mean a great deal in someone’s life.

Frequently asked questions
How large does my urn have to be?

If you want all the ashes of one person in your urn, you will need a large urn of at least 150 cubic inches (2,5 liters). If you buy an urn of 240 c.i. all ashes will fit in. The best way to be sure you have the right size is to measure the box in which the ashes are kept. I create urns in all sizes. My urns are an object of art. This is what is most important to me: to create an urn which breathes beauty and honors the person. If the urn is not full-size there are several options. My experience is that my customers sometimes buy several urns and split the ashes between several persons. Or another option is to scatter the ashes partly. When you need an urn for your pet you can use the chart mentioned on one of the other FAQ.

How large does the urn for my pet have to be?

You can use the following chart:
1 - 24 lbs 30 c.i. / 0,5 liter
25 - 50 lbs 60 c.i. / 1 liter
25 - 72 lbs 90 c.i. / 1.5 liter
72 - 100 lbs 120 c.i./ 2 liter
100 - 150 lbs 180 c.i. /3 liter

How do I close the urn?

My urns are not threaded, because it may cause problems in future when the wood reacts to the humidity in your home. The design of the lid is often fragile, you should not use force to open it. Therefor I create a simple lid. You can easily close it. If you want it to be closed permanently use a little bit of silicon glue. If you use just a little, you will be able to unlock it in future if you decide to scatter the ashes.

Or you can keep the lid open. Advantage of this is that you can turn the lid in any position that you like. You can keep the ashes safe by using a plastic bag (see filling instructions). If you want a snug fit, you can apply a little bit of tape at the tenon of the lid. Be aware: only put force on the base of the lid.

What is the best way to fill my urn?

You can fill the urn by placing a simple plastic bag in the urn. Blow some air in the bag, so it will spread inside the urn. Then take a funnel and spoon the ashes gently into the urn. After that make a knot and put the knot inside the urn. You can place the lid on top of the urn. I usually make urns with a small opening, because of it's beauty.

I have a problem with my urn, what should I do?

If you have any problems with my urns, please contact me. I can give you advise how the handle the problem. Or if the problem is serious you can send the urn to me. I never had a problem that I couldn't fix so far.

How fast can you ship abroad Europe?

My urns are shipped with DHL express outside the EU. Normally it is delivered within a week or even less than a week. You can follow your package with the track and trace code. They only ship to a normal address, P.O. boxes are not allowed. DHL requires a phone number so please add your phone number to guarantee a quick delivery! DHL might use this number if you need to pay import taxes. The rules for import taxes differ from country to country, Etsy does not collect this for you.

How should I take care of my urn?

My urns are durable products. I use non water resistant wax, because of it's natural look, but I also use high gloss and satin lacquer. You can read it in the item description. In case I used wax you can only clean it with a dry cloth. If you want to let it shine, rub it. You can also use some furniture wax if you like some extra shine. In case I used lacquer you can clean it with a damp or dry cloth. Please keep your urn out of direct sunlight and don't place it near a heating source.

Custom and personalized orders

As the demand for my urns has increased so much, that I have almost run out of stock, I have decided that for the time being I don’t accept custom work. It takes a lot of time to take special assignments. If you feel that I am the person who should create your urn, feel free to contact me. I always willing to look at special requests.
