Music Boxes made from sustainable local wood from Holland

Robin Wood makes beautiful music boxes from city wood.
These trees usually disappear into the wood chipper after the necessary removal (sickness, storms, modification infrastructure) by the municipality, but by the initiative of cabinetmakers they are not fragmented but cut and dried, and then given back to the city in a new form. It is beautiful and unique wood!

So, Welcome in my shop!

Rob has been working as a furniture maker for many years, but since 2016 he Specialized himself making music boxes. "I have now become a full-time gift maker." He sells his music boxes on markets, via Etsy, his own webshop/workshop and some stores in the Netherlands.

What is the different between hand crank and wind up mechanisms?

With a hand crank mechanism one has to keep on turning in order to hear the melody. The handle is always on the side of the music box. Depending on the melody it is either a silver-coloured one with a small red handle or a completely gold-coloured. A hand crank mechanism always has 18 tones.

A wind up mechanism plays by itself for a few minutes. One only has to wind it up. The longer one winds it up, the longer it plays. The wind up handle is hidden on the bottom of the music box. There are different types on wind up mechanisms. The smallest has 18 different tones. Bigger and more expensive ones have 30, 36, 50 or even 72 tones.

Can you make a custom tune for me?

If you have your own composition that you would like to have in a music box (or a tune that doesn't yet exist on a mechanism), there are a few options:

In Bangkok Sorapong of Turn Music Box builds 'Custom Tunes' for small 18 note mechanisms. They charge about 175 euros excluding shipping and tax. For questions and more information:  It is then possible to let Rob build a wooden music box for this mechanism.

You can also request a custom tune for a luxury 30 note wind up musical movement. Send your request to or via Etsy

Another possibility is a 'build your own melody' set. If you are musically gifted you can make your own melody with a perforating punch on a piece of paper that is included in the set. This mechanism has 30 notes and a beautiful warm sound. It is hand cranked, which means that you have to keep turning to hear the melody. Set available in this shop, see listings.

What does 18/30/36/50 notes mean?

This indicates the number of different notes on the mechanism. To be more precise, it is the number of tuned teeth on the playing comb that one will hear once the music boxes is running. There is also a rotating cylinder with pins. The position of these pins determines the melody. Every time a pin hits the playing comb, a note is heard. The smallest and most common mechanism has 18 notes (for the music boxes: Lude, Celesta, Robin, Tamino). There are also bigger mechanisms with 30, 36 (Tamino. Calandra) and 50 tones (Orpheus). One can image that the more tones a mechanism has, the better it will sound. Mechanisms with more tones often sound closer to the original. The bigger mechanisms also play longer and contain a longer piece of music. The quality of the materials of the mechanisms is also better which results in better sound quality.

Can I get my own logo/picture engraved?

Yes that is possible. Keep in mind that the engraving is in black and white. If you have a graphic image of a logo or picture it is possible to engrave it. If you provide a good quality pdf image, this costs 15 euros. If the image still needs editing an additional 10-20 euros will be charged. Send an email with the image to get an estimate of the price.

Where can I enter the text for engraving?

During check out you can 'leave a message for seller' There you can enter the text for engraving. To avoid language errors please check carefully before sending. For more info about the font and lay out see other question.

Which font and lay out is used?

By default we use the font 'Gabriola Regular'. A subtle, elegant font with beautiful slim lines, perfect for engravings (another font is also possible as long as it is in our font collection).

We take care of the mark up of the engraving. How it will look depends on the number of characters and the available surface. It is possible that long sentences are divided into multiple lines. If you would like to see a preview of the mark up please leave us a comment at the 'leave a message for seller' during check out.

Can I get multiple surfaces engraved?

Yes, that's possible. To add an engraving to a music box go to the item 'add engraving' choose the area where the engraving should come and add to cart.

For example, if you want 2 engravings on the box, add this product (separately) to the shopping cart twice. You can specify the text for engraving during checkout. Clearly state on which face of the box each text should come.
