Ruby Rewind è nato dal mio modo di essere cresciuto. Sono cresciuto a casa di mia nonna con mio fratello e mio zio, ed era una casa dove le cose si accumulavano nel tempo. Mio zio andava spesso a caccia di oggetti usati e portava a casa tutto ciò che catturava la sua attenzione, e mia nonna aveva le sue collezioni – Fiesta Ware, vetri colorati e altri pezzi che amava – e raramente si lasciava sfuggire qualcosa. Nel corso dei decenni, la casa si è riempita di vestiti, giocattoli, bicchieri, porcellane, libri, giochi da tavolo, oggetti d'antiquariato – strati di vita quotidiana e storia e ho passato molto tempo a esaminarli tutti.

Crescendo, i soldi scarseggiavano, quindi gli abiti usati e le occasionali gite nei negozi dell'usato a Chicago e nel South Side facevano parte della mia vita. Crescendo, questa tendenza mi è rimasta impressa. Ho comprato i miei vestiti al liceo, da adulta ho fatto acquisti nei mercatini dell'usato per pagarmi il matrimonio e, in seguito, ho arredato di seconda mano gran parte della nostra prima casa. Era una scelta pratica, ma anche intenzionale, perché le cose del passato spesso vengono migliorate e acquistano un significato più profondo.

Ruby Rewind si concentra sulla capacità di notare quei pezzi. Quelli che catturano l'attenzione, che sembrano ben fatti o che hanno un tocco di familiarità. Mi ispiro agli antenati, ai film d'epoca e alle vecchie fotografie, e scelgo oggetti che riflettano quel senso di storia e carattere. Prendo pezzi di epoche e stili diversi e li passo a qualcuno che li amerà altrettanto.

Rubino mi è sembrato il nome giusto perché ogni pezzo è una gemma a modo suo, destinata a essere ritrovata, non dimenticata. Il rosso ha sempre fatto parte della mia storia, dai miei capelli all'anello di fidanzamento, fino al nome di mia figlia.

Ruby Rewind grew out of the way I was raised. I grew up in my grandmother’s house with my brother and uncle, and it was a home where things accumulated over time. My uncle would thrift often and bring home whatever caught his eye, and my grandmother had collections of her own—Fiesta Ware, colored glass, and other pieces she loved—and rarely let anything go. Over the decades, the house filled with clothes, toys, glassware, china, books, board games, antiques—layers of everyday life and history and I spent a lot of time going through it all.

Money was tight growing up, so hand-me-downs and occasional thrift trips around Chicago and the South Side were part of life. As I got older, that stayed with me. I thrifted my own clothes in high school, hunted estate sales as an adult to help pay for my wedding, and later furnished most of our first home secondhand. It was practical, but it was also intentional as things from the past are often made better, and they feel more meaningful.

Ruby Rewind is about noticing those pieces. The ones that catch your eye, feel well-made, or bring something familiar with them. I’m inspired by family ancestry, period films, and old photography, and I choose items that reflect that sense of history and character. I source pieces from different eras and styles and pass those finds along to someone new who will love them just as much.

Ruby felt like the right name because each piece is a gem in its own way—meant to be found again, not forgotten. Red has always been part of my story, from my hair to my engagement ring to my daughter’s name.
