Retro Futuristic Wearable Art
The name Penelope’s counter is inspired by the characters from the journals of Arthur Joseph Munby, a British Victorian diarist, poet, portrait photographer and barrister, which can be found in Trinity College, Cambridge.
In his journals he writes about his encounters with several shop girls and his fascination of the working women, their empowerment and how they challenged a set world order.
You see, previously shop work was a closed world for most women; all specialist shops were exclusively run by men and passed down from man to man.
But that was about to change. By 1851, 2 ½ million women were shaking the foundations and expectancies of middle-class women with their drive to support themselves, rather than being supported by their Victorian husbands.
And something special was going on behind the doors of a certain home in Langdon Place, London; the Society for Promoting the Employment of Women emerged. The ladies of Langdon Place were pioneers of social progress, better education and training for girls and cracking open worlds that were previously just reserved for men. Women could carry out shop work just as well as their male counterparts. Stating: “Why should bearded men be employed to sell ribbon, lace gloves, neck handkerchiefs and the other dozen trifles to be found in a silk mercer's or haberdasher's?”. And thus the world changed, not only could females like myself work in shops, they could own them too!
These women are a story of aspiration, shrugging off the notions of nobility, challenging the set ideologies of society and rising up against the established order. And it is exactly that attitude within the Victorian era that makes the ladies of Langdon Place, and their shop girls, the ultimate Steam Punks.

Frequently asked questions
Does the Covid-19 pandemic have any influence on the delivery of my order?
Yes, this global pandemic causes global delays in shipping. I strongly advise to purchase the track & trace upgrade in your shipping options to be able to track your package, I still make sure to ship bi-weekly and have your orders out as promised, how ever I cannot influence a global pandemic or international shipping companies. Packages will still arrive, but might have a delay up to 11 weeks. For the most current information to your country you can check this site: https://www.postnl.nl/en/customer-service/delivery-status/international-service-alerts/
What can I do if my package still hasn't arrived?
If your package still hasn't arrived, please be patience. I'm happy to answer all of your questions or concerns via Etsy messaging. But please be aware that I do not have the power to influence a global pandemic or international shipping companies.
Since the biggest delays I've been told by our Royal Mail service might take up to 11 weeks, I ask for you to sit tight within that period of time.
If your package still hasn't arrived after that time frame, and you fear it might be lost, I'm happy to help find solutions that will make you smile again.
Why does my order show 1 -11 weeks for delivery while the item listing shows shorter delivery times?
Because of the global pandemic, orders can take longer to arrive.
The listing shows the options I buy for your shipping, all packages have a priority shipping label and are send via Royal Mail. By using Royal Mail and using priority shipping labels, I am doing all that I can to have your order delivered at your home a.s.a.p.
The listing shows the normal amount of time it will take, in non-pandemic times, for your package to arrive. Some orders will still be delivered within that time frame, but since these are crazy times the shipping company cannot guarantee them, so neither can I. All packages will still be delivered, but might take longer than normal.
Why is there a tracked and untracked shipping option?
Whenever you place an order with me there are several shipping options to choose from.
Whether you choose tracked or untracked it doesn't affect shipping time. Both will be send via the Royal Mail and will have a priority sticker on them to get them to your home a.s.a.p. The untracked option is the cheapest shipping option. It costs the least amount of money, but does not allow your package to be tracked, neither by you or me. Therefore I cannot update you along the way on its whereabouts nor is this package eligible for any refunds. The tracked shipping will secure your package once it is left by me at the courier's desk, it will allow me and you to track your package wherever and whenever and is eligible for refunds if undelivered.
General Update Covid 19
In the Netherlands, the coronavirus is in its third wave. All of our non-essential businesses are closed, travel is prohibited and the residents of our country cannot be on the street past 9 p.m.
Many other countries are facing severe challenges as well. As a result, strict corona measures remain in place. In many countries, steps have been taken to minimise physical contact when delivering mail and parcels. In addition, many countries around the world are taking measures that may affect the processing and delivery of mail and parcels.
The various measures and precautions taken to contain the coronavirus may negatively affect transit times. Please keep this in mind when you order
