The Jean Jean "WISDOM" Cachet is in French with double-sided images and text as follows:

side 1 ∙ An owl perched on the branch of a dead tree, with the French,"La nuit donne conseil" or "Night teaches wisdom/brings wisdom."
side 2 ∙ A moth flying into a flame, with the French "Nul plaisir sans peine," or "No pleasure without pain."

One of our favorite seals to date! We love the imagery (owls! moths!) and the grown up, truth-telling tone that this pair offers. On one side of the seal, we see an owl perched on the branch of a dead tree. We appreciate the quiet night scene and trust that the wise old owl will keep guard and remain watchful from its perch. How much there is to learn through quiet observation and the benefit of time! The French here translates to, "The night brings wisdom/offers counsel." The other side of shows a moth flying into the flame of a candle accompanied by a famous phrase about pleasure and pain . . . The moth craves the light but if she gets too near she risks her life! A reminder of the dance that we all do weighing risk and reward and the daily temptations that we face as imperfect creatures.

The Victorians used wax seals to stamp all of their correspondence and the choice of which seal to use was intensely personal and powerful. The seal was the first thing that the reader would see - a preview to what was written inside. News of a death required a somber seal with a phrase of comfort, a "billet doux" to a lover something tender or playful, and a business contract perhaps just stamped with the day of the week.
