Artisan olive oil gifts

Hello and welcome to my shop which features our hand-produced artisan olive oil.

Almost 30 years old, by industry standards, our grove is petit but beautiful. Located in Crossman 160km south of Perth in Western Australia the 70 tree grove is set within a small section on our 10-acre property and has always been managed using regenerative agriculture practices founded on Permaculture principles.

Our little grove is pretty low maintenance. Development of soil and trunk health of the trees has been our main focus with a little bit of pruning every few years. Vehicle movement through the grove is restricted to protect the soil from compaction and delicate roots from being crushed.

We aim to keep the soil through the grove continually covered with grass or mulch. Our horses are used to roam through freely to aid with soil improvement. In spring they feed on the seasonal long grasses that have been slashed for mulch and in summer we set up hay stations in between rows. The movement of the horses through the grove results in their nutrient-rich manure and remnant hay being turned into the topsoil by their hooves as a subtle soil enhancement method.

Having consistent vegetation cover or mulch on our soil means rain is easily absorbed when it falls and our trees haven't required reticulation for 12 years. Olive trees have a big year every alternate year with a good year in our grove yielding around 1.3 tonnes of raw olives which converts to about 200 litres of oil.

Picking our olives and pruning is done gently by hand as a shared family activity and takes around 10 days work each year. Hand harvesting is done by combing the branches with a rake type implement which means we do not need to prune as regularly resulting in an abundant shaggy canopy that actually provides very good natural shelter for native birds and reptiles.
