RING SIZES YOU WILL NEED

I used common sizes for the jump rings so you can find (or make) them easily. In this tutorial, I used
----18 gauge (1.02 mm), 6 mm inner diameter

When I make this design, my most common size for rings is
----20 gauge (0.8 mm), 4.5 mm inner diameter
(FYI: This is the ring size I used to make my Full Persian bracelet!)

You can change the ring sizes from what I used in the tutorials, and each tutorial gives advice on what sizes will work.

Gold fill means a layer of karat gold is bonded to a core wire, usually brass.

I use "14/20" gold fill wire. This has 14 karat gold (the 14 in 14/20) that is 1/20, 5%, of the entire weight (the 20 in 14/20).

Unlike gold plating, the gold layer does not wear off and can be polished. It will last and be beautiful for a long, long time.

Gold fill wire provides a lower-cost alternative to solid karat gold wire, but it still gives the same beautiful appearance. You will only see the 14K gold.

Welding permanently fuses the cut edges of jump rings, creating a continuous ring. It is stronger than soldering. It is also more attractive because it does not add a different material to the ring but uses the wire already there.

Welded rings will not open over time, so your piece of jewelry will stay in good shape.

For all pieces, end rings at the clasp or other stress points are welded. That may be all they need if the chain is strong by itself. With a few designs, especially those with larger rings, all rings are welded. In many cases, you can choose either option, and the listings will tell you which one is recommended.

I can do it for you (see the policies section on cleaning) or you can do it.

Place a piece of aluminum foil in a glass or ceramic bowl, non-shiny side up. Add a tablespoon of baking soda, and enough very hot water to cover the jewelry. Stir the baking soda until it mostly dissolves.

Place the jewelry in the bowl on the aluminum foil. Wait a few minutes, then stir gently. Wait a few more minutes, and the tarnish will be gone. (You may need to repeat for heavily tarnished silver.) If you get a rotten-egg smell, from the sulfur, it's working.

Remove the item and rinse thoroughly. Pour out the liquid, and throw away the aluminum foil.

This process does not polish the silver. It only removes the tarnish.
