If you ever studied psychology at university, you will have done the Pedal Car paper. The arrival of a pedal car in our lives marks our first experience of trauma. Freud wouldn’t necessarily agree but what did he know, he never had one – I don’t think the horse and trap had the same impact on the Victorian psyche as the car did on later generations. Life ticks along nicely when you’re a tot, not much to stress about, that ‘live and let live’ attitude serves you well until – That Day. That day Smug McSmugpants pedals up your drive in his brand new peppermint green ‘Champion’ pedal car, with white-wall tyres. White-wall tyres? We all know that day, the day the sky fell in. And we never get over it, do we – the money we spend on cars – bigger cars, faster cars, more luxurious cars, cars with coffee cup holders. The bad calls we make, the losses, the humiliations. Over time, we grow broad shoulders and learn to absorb most of life’s cruel blows but never that damn Champion pedal car. Nah … nah… I can’t shake that one off … one of these days Smug McSmugpants, one of these days …
