Old geometry, quietly made for today
Clavis & Compass è nata dalla passione per i margini dei libri antichi: i cerchi, le stelle e i bordi decorati con lettere che riempiono le pagine dei grimori rinascimentali, dei trattati alchemici e dei taccuini dei primi geometri. Quei sigilli erano realizzati con nient'altro che un compasso, un righello e tanta pazienza. Erano pensati per essere contemplati e tramandati, non per essere ignorati frettolosamente.
Il nostro nome deriva da questi due strumenti. Clavis in latino significa chiave, ciò che apre. Il compasso disegna il cerchio, la prima e più antica forma di ordine. Tra di essi si colloca tutto ciò che creiamo.
Ogni sigillo della Serie I è un disegno originale, realizzato in oro su sfondo nero e basato su una geometria precisa, senza immagini predefinite o simboli presi in prestito. Attorno a ogni bordo è inciso un motto latino, scelto per ciò che richiede a chi lo legge:
- I · Clavis: Quod clausum est aperietur. Ciò che è chiuso sarà aperto.
- II · Circinus: Omnia in mensura et numero. Tutte le cose in misura e numero.
- III · Lux: Lux ex tenebris oritur. La luce sorge dalle tenebre.

- V · Porta: Per portam ad astra. Through the gate to the stars.
La nostra prima collezione presenta questi sigilli su candele di soia color ambra con coperchi neri, un look da farmacia che si illumina delicatamente una volta accese. Ogni candela è pensata come un piccolo rituale di attenzione: un momento per accendere una fiamma, leggere il motto e decidere cosa si intende iniziare, aprire o lasciare.
Vogliamo chiarire due cose. Primo, le nostre candele sono realizzate su ordinazione: colate, stampate e spedite dal nostro partner di produzione, Printify, attraverso la sua rete di produttori di candele. Questo significa che nulla rimane in magazzino e ogni ordine viene realizzato appositamente per te. Secondo, non pretendiamo nulla di magico. Un sigillo non cambierà la tua fortuna. Può però offrirti un oggetto bello e significativo, un motivo per fermarti a riflettere, e crediamo che questo abbia un valore inestimabile.

Clavis & Compass began with a fascination for the margins of old books: the circles, stars and lettered rims that fill the pages of Renaissance grimoires, alchemical treatises and the notebooks of early geometers. Those seals were made with nothing more than a compass, a straightedge and patience. They were built to be contemplated and handed down, not to be hurried past.
Our name comes from those two instruments. Clavis is Latin for key, the thing that opens. The compass draws the circle, the first and oldest shape of order. Between them sits everything we make.
Each seal in Series I is an original design, drawn in gold on black and built from true geometry, with no stock clip art and no borrowed symbols. Around every rim runs a Latin motto, chosen for what it asks of the person reading it:

- II · Circinus: Omnia in mensura et numero. All things in measure and number.
- III · Lux: Lux ex tenebris oritur. Light rises out of darkness.
- IV · Silentium: In silentio sapientia. In silence, wisdom.

Our first collection sets these seals on amber soy candles with black lids, an apothecary look that glows softly once lit. Each one is offered as a small ritual of attention: a moment to light a flame, read the motto and decide what you mean to begin, open or set down.
We should be clear about two things. First, our candles are made to order and poured, printed and dispatched by our production partner, Printify, through their candle-making network. That means nothing sits in a warehouse and every order is made for you. Second, we make no claims to magic. A seal will not change your fortunes. What it can do is give you a beautiful, deliberate object and a reason to pause, and we think that is worth a great deal.
