About RainyDayYarn

On Etsy since 2017

For the love of Yarn and all things Textile

Thank you for visiting Rainy Day Yarns

I don’t know whether to describe myself as a knitter who likes to sew or a sewer who has always knitted. Now I can add that I’m a knitter who needs to dye.

I started making project bags when my partner and I moved to Woodville. I joined a Creative Fibre group and was embarrassed taking my knitting there in ziplock plastic bags. I started small, using up some of my vintage fabrics that I had stashed over the years, I found that people at the group were interested in my bags and so that encouraged me to make more. I have since started experimenting with different types of materials and styles. A friend suggested that she would like to be able to see what work was in her bag without having to open it, and so my clear vinyl/felt bags were born… This progressed and the obvious next step was an Etsy shop. This suited as I wanted to make use of my time while being a stay at home Mum for my two Great Danes. (one who is very elderly)

I started dying yarn as I knit a lot of fair isle socks and wanted more of a colour range to pick and chose from. Since then I have caught the bug, and wanted to share my love of colour. All my yarn in the shop is hand dyed in very small quantities, some of which I keep for myself and the rest I like to package with my project bags to sell.

Frequently asked questions
Why is Shipping to the United States so Expensive?

Changes made to the USPS have made increases to the cost of international postal services. Please see New Zealand Post website https://www.nzpost.co.nz/personal/sending-internationally/world-zones/usps-changes

The changes made by the United States Postal Service (USPS) will result in an increase to the cost of international services you use. These changes have increased the rate of sending a parcel to the USA considerably, impacting our under 2kg products the most including International Air Small Parcel.

Do you refund postage overcharges?

Yes. If I have overcharged postage I will refund it ( unless its a $1.00 or under)
Sometimes it is hard to gauge how much postage will be, especially during the ever changing Covid 19 times.

How many Skeins do I need to make a pair of Socks?

One 100g skein will be enough for an average sized foot ( even a mans ankle sock)
My sock sets allow plenty for a sock, with contrast heels and toes ( even ribbing if wanted)

Care instructions

As a general rule Please hand wash in cool water and dry flat ( preferably inside out)

If you are making a gift for someone and you think they may not want to hand wash then be sure to choose a Machine Washable/Superwash yarn.

Also Hand Dyed Yarns (especially if they are an intense colour) may bleed into your washing water on occasion. While I do my utmost to prevent this (rinsing until the water runs clear) and if I know its a possibility I will mention on the label, please do a washed swatch first to check. This is would be wise before embarking on a multi coloured big project that has light and dark hand dyed yarns.

Do you have Dye lots?

I dye in small batches (maximum of 4 - 5 skeins) at a time.
Even within these small batches variations occur. This is the nature of hand dyed yarn.
Each skein is unique.
Please if you have a project in mind, I encourage you to buy enough for your project.
Also it is recommended on a bigger project to alternate between skeins every 2 rows or so to prevent colour blocking.

Does my order have a tracking number?

I do not offer tracking on International orders as it is too expensive ( think double the postage costs) If you would like tracking on International orders, message me and I can get you a quote.
Because I have no tracking on International orders, once they leave me, I have no control over when they will arrive.
Particularly during Covid 19 orders can take some time to arrive.

NZ customers - Tracking is available as an upgrade
