Carrying On The Family Business
Nei primissimi anni '70 mia madre e mia nonna aprirono un negozio di abbigliamento e articoli da regalo e lo chiamarono Oogie Originals. Si trovava su Livernois Blvd. a Detroit, Michigan. Veniva venduto abbigliamento fatto a mano da mia madre e mia nonna, che erano delle sarte eccellenti, oltre a una varietà di articoli da regalo importati da posti come l'India. Ero una bambina molto piccola all'epoca, ma ho ancora ricordi di quando passavo del tempo in quel negozio.
A metà degli anni '70 mia mamma se ne andò e mia nonna e sua sorella, mia zia Jennie, continuarono l'attività rinominando il negozio Oogie's e trasferendolo a Birmingham, Michigan. Smisero di vendere vestiti fatti a mano e si concentrarono di più sugli articoli da regalo tradizionali come biglietti di auguri, candele, gioielli, articoli di cristallo, eccetera. Molti anni dopo il negozio chiuse quando mia nonna morì e mia zia Jennie andò finalmente in pensione.
Ho fatto shopping a vendite immobiliari, aste e negozi dell'usato fin dagli anni '80 e ho accumulato un sacco di roba. Nel 2015 ho deciso che era tempo di iniziare a fare pulizia nella mia collezione ed è stato allora che ho deciso di aprire il mio negozio Etsy. La mia prima grande decisione è stata come chiamarlo. Dopo averci pensato per settimane, ho pensato che sarebbe stato appropriato continuare con il nome Oogie, aggiungendo collection per renderlo mio.
Da dove viene il nome Oogie? Da bambini era il nome che io e mio fratello chiamavamo nostra nonna perché non riuscivamo a pronunciare Eugenie, il suo nome di battesimo. Era la nostra nonna Oogie, il nome di un'azienda di famiglia con radici che risalgono a oltre 50 anni fa.
In the very early 1970's my Mother and Grandmother started a clothing and gift shop and named it Oogie Originals. it was located on Livernois Blvd. in Detroit, Michigan. It carried clothing handmade by my mother and grandmother, who were excellent seamstresses, as well as a variety of imported gift items from places like India. I was a very small child at the time but I still have memories of spending time in that store.
In the mid 70's my Mom made her exit and my Grandmother and her sister, my Aunt Jennie, carried on the business renaming the store to Oogie's and moving it to Birmingham, Michigan. They stopped carrying the handmade clothing and focused more on traditional gift shop items such as greeting cards, candles, jewelry, crystal items, et cetera. Many years later the store closed when my Grandmother passed and my Aunt Jennie finally retired.
I have been shopping estate sales, auctions and thrift shops since the 1980's and have amassed a lot of stuff. In 2015 I decided it was time to start purging my collection and that is when I decided to open my Etsy shop. My first big decision was what to name it. After spending weeks thinking about it I thought it would be appropriate to continue on with the Oogie name, adding collection to make it my own.
Where did the name Oogie come from? As babies it was what my brother and I called our Grandmother because we could not pronounce Eugenie, her given name. She was our Grandma Oogie, the name sake of a family business with roots over 50 years old.
