About

Our little urban farm is filled with chickens, geese and an entire backyard full of lil' bun buns.

We have English Lops, Holland Lops and some Lion Heads we can't seem to part with.

But our true loves are our angora bunnies. Though we have primarily English angoras, we also have a Giant angora, some giant crosses, a French and two Satin angoras whom we hope will fall in love, as bun buns do, and have little satin babies someday.

It is this love of our bunnies, all close to 100 of them now, on which we base our fiber farm.

Most of us humans understand that rabbits are primarily prey. They are a food source for other animals.

For those of us who cherish life and believe in the preservation of it, any animal that must die for the pleasure of something larger is just plain wrong.

Our bunnies are loved, groomed, talked to, named and fed an organic diet full of fresh greens and apples and berries and romaine and hay and grain. They are eager to produce long, luxurious fiber in abundance till it must be plucked or sheared every 90 days.

The angora bunny was bred years ago to be a fiber animal. Though at the time, some of those original breeders bred them for fiber and in their later years, for food. Consequently, angora rabbits would be unable to live in the wild because of the history of their breeding, the length of their coats and it's tendency to matt and their domestication throughout the decades.

Angora rabbit fiber is 7% warmer than standard sheep's wool. Unlike sheep's wool, it contains no oil or lanolin. Also unlike sheep's wool, it is water resistant. Angora fiber is very fine and delicate. It's considered an exotic fiber because of the small amounts, relatively speaking, that can be harvested every three months and the fine and delicate structure of the fiber itself.

The distinctiveness of angora is the "halo" that is produced when the fiber has been spun into yarn and the yarn has been worked with by the one who is knitting or crocheting or weaving. It is a look like no other. It is fine and whispy and looks ethereal once completed.

Because of the limited amount of angora fiber that is produced from these small, sweet and gentle creatures, angora yarn and items can cost more due to it's limited availability and the amount of effort involved in harvesting.

Angora bunnies are very rarely aggressive. They are docile, gentle, loving animals who ask for nothing more than a few apple bites and some gentle head noogies when you come to their cage.

Each day, we choose a bun bun who might be in need of grooming or a shearing and we bring him/her into the house. There we play with him for a bit before we work with him and he gets treats and toys that no other bun bun gets that day. He stays inside with us overnight and the next day we return him to his pen.

The buns look forward to their special times with us and we find that they are calm and quiet as we share our evenings with them.

We invite you to try our delicate, handspun angora yarn. We are certain you will find it just as soft and luxurious as we do.
