About

Hi! I'm Ginger or Gin, otherwise known as Virginia in my past professional life, or afreespirit on Ravelry and afreespirit1 on Twitter. For all my life I've been a "crafty person" flitting from one hobby to another like a butterfly after tasty nectar emptying one flower and moving on to another. Some have lasted - like that same butterfly finding a garden full of zinnias and sticking around. Sewing has been that thing for me.

For years my mantra has been, View Your World With Absolute Wonder! That's where my shop name came from. No one person can personally clean up the environment, but each of us can do little things, and a lot of little things add up to a lot.

Most people don't major in such esoteric things as Botany, but that is exactly what I did much to the surprise of my friends. My love for the environment carries over to my shop as well. My bags are as close to 100% natural fibers as I can make them. The only exceptions are thread (the 100% cotton thread I tried broke too easily), zippers, and the heavy weight interfacing I use on the bag bottoms. I even use all cotton quilt batting in my notions pouches and wedge bags!

Another thing I do is to eliminate waste and recycle. I use selvedges and little leftovers to make strip-quilted items and I donate the rest to a local elementary school for their art projects.

Even my packaging is environmentally friendly. the Eco Enclose bags I use has a second strip so they can be easily reused, and in addition they are fully compostable.

The class I took to learn how to make wire-wrapped jewelry also taught me how to make wire-wrapped stitch markers. When I first opened my shop it was my intention to only use natural materials such as gemstones, shell, and bone, but I adore playing with polymer clay, so I have to admit I'm not a 100% earth mama.

I have other hobbies such as gardening, reading, and photography. My years behind the camera have come in handy when it comes to shop photography, and I've even used some of my own garden photos in my logo and business cards.

Life is short. Live it to the fullest!
