Denny Carlisle's Profile

About

My name is Denny Carlisle. I'm a retired IBM Manager who took up wood carving in 2000 as a result of a woodcarving class my wife got me for Christmas. It was the first of many classes I've taken, and I even began the rewarding experience of teaching wood carving classes at my local WoodCraft store.

But I continue to carve to boost Band-Aid sales because I'm heavily invested in Johnson & Johnson!

I started carving basic kitchen implemments out of cherry wood after seeing similar items at the annual River Festival in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania in 2002. The carver's name was Bob DeWitt from Buffalo Mills, Pennsylvania. I was especially impressed with the beauty of his cherry wood art. He was kind enough to describe the process he used, and I decided to emulate his style. This process is described when you look at the individual carvings in my shop.

After starting with some basic spoons, I expanded my own cherry wood art inventory by asking everyone I knew if I could see any wooden kitchen implements in their homes. I then branched out to include other household items, only being limited by my imagination and the suggestions of family members (who were recipients of all my early carvings).
