I am a self-taught carver with many years of carving experience. Most of my carvings are of Santa. I started carving Santa many years ago because my wife collects Santas and I wanted to carve one for her. That was many, many Santas ago. My carvings are usually from basswood blocks. I create my own patterns so that no two are exactly alike. The only tools I use are manual hand tools like knives and gouges. I never use power tools or sandpaper. Although I admire the finely sanded and painted carvings that other carvers create, it is not my style of carving. I want the finished piece to have those flat cut surfaces that tell you it was made by hand. I believe that is often what gives carvings personality or character.
Another carving medium that I enjoy is the wooden thread spool that was the standard when my grandmother loved to sew. I like to carve Santa faces into these spools. They vary in…
