Verge 'n Nita's Profile

About

We at the Apache Moon Studio get to make jewelry we like. What can be better?
We live in East Texas, Athens, near Tyler and Dallas
We are usually only two. One (Verge)is mostly Cherokee & French, and the other (Nita/aka Nee) is partly Chiracahua Apache & Cherokee. Both of us were raised in mainstream east Texas culture and both attended Texas schools and colleges, both graduated from the University of Texas. Verge lived in Hawaii for 8 years and went to university there too. He also paints murals in our town (like in the court rooms, etc - not graffiti - though graffiti could certainly be fun too...) We have been married for a long time - but not long enough.

[Fall, 2007: More and more, Opama Cohen is working in our shop. He is a little bit Navaho as well. (No! That isn't a requisite... just a coincidence! Also, pretty common in this area.) He is very creative and…

He is very creative and industrious. It is hard to keep him busy enough to keep him happy but the result is worth it.]

We have cats everywhere. The shop cat is Bippy. She shares the workbench with us. It is where her heating pad is. The latest addition to the shop proper is Polly. She is a little black bowlegged cat with golden orange eyes. Polly has a pet possum named George. The Ginger Cat in the photo (Barefoot) has been our constant friend & sidekick for about 13 years and he has a dog named Daisy. I will leave all the rest to your imagination.

We have ruined a lot of silver and a little gold learning to do what we do. Practice really does improve the product! We hope you enjoy some of our work.

Everyday, if not listed as going to another charity, 100% of every sale goes to animal rescue and shelter. We have rescued, had spayed/neutered 32 cats this year. We currently (as of Aug 4, 2008 -because it changes almost daily) have 27 cats and 3 dogs. The vet bills, shots, medications, food, upkeep is astounding and, so far, we have supported it completely out of our own pockets. We would gladly accept donations now. Things we can ALWAYS use are bedding, Revolution, and money. We are concerned that we will not always be able to do it so we are looking into the possibility of becoming a registered non-profit org but that is still a long time off.

Thank you VERY much for stopping to see us.
