I love knitting and working with yarn. When I started discovering yarns that weren’t acrylic I didn’t really have the budget to buy them. I wanted to try dying and felting wool and I wanted to make pretty lace shawls with angora and silk but I was afraid of making a mistake and ruining the investment I had made. I turned to unraveling sweaters that I found at my local thrift stores. I found the actual unraveling process really relaxing and enjoyable and if I accidentally felted some yarn I was trying to dye it wasn’t a big deal. When I ripped a hole in some lace I was knitting I wasn’t going to cry over the $2 worth of angora I had reclaimed. All of the time I spent was more of a learning experience than anything else.
I think everyone should have the opportunity to try new things without a huge investment. Who wants to spend $50 on yarn only to find out that you hate it or that you made a mistake?…
