About

I am Beth Rousseau. Painting seems to be one of my most basic functions. Over the years color has become my second nature, and exploring painting techniques my passion. I can see all the layers of something as it lies before me as if I'm watching a sketch being created and filled in with paint and ink. I have shown my work at several coffee shops in and around Denver, I have also had a guest spot in the Santa Fe Arts District. My main body of work is in a style I describe as Psychedelic Folk Art, I bring my take on the whimsy of Folk Art and combine it with the vibrant color presence representative of the 1960's Psychedelia movement. My inspiration is drawn from the world around me, places that I travel to, new people I meet, things that I see, lines and shapes made by man or otherwise... There is a great vibrance to this world that I strive to convey in my paintings. The world I like to see is through the lens of an old dirty camera,…

The world I like to see is through the lens of an old dirty camera, whites now umber and color now with a dingy overlay. This is the metropolis I see. The farm lands I see. Deep with culture, rich with years beyond our dreams. I listen to the sounds around me, and how they respond to the colors and sketches of the world. In the city they are deep and bellowing. They are high and chiming. They are cadmium yellow pale, and phalto blue 25% white. And notes are taken and filed accordingly.
I enjoy layers of color, layers of paint. Layers of life. Most of my currently available art is in a more abstract style. There is a series that delves into an acrylic dream scape, and explores layer upon layer of colorful dream like essences. A series involving a red square, combining bold shapes and washes along side poetry. A mixed media series with images connected with layers of paint and soft gel they have almost a ghost of advertising past feel to them, while their modern integrity remains. Most of my limited edition prints are copied from watercolor originals, and several of them are copied from original drawings with acrylic paint elements. All my art simply strives towards bringing my understanding of the world closer to me, and in turn closer to the world.
