Mattie O.'s Profile

About

I readily admit that for an artist, I have an unusual background. I was a civil engineer on off-shore oil rigs, bar owner in Vail, ski bum, hermit in a one-room log cabin, an environmental attorney, cleaned guns for the Israeli Army, and a full-time single mom. My only explanation is to quote Helen Keller, " Life is an adventure, or nothing."
I approach my artwork with the passion and intensity of an adventure.

What's with all the bikes and trikes?
Bikes are good! Most of us have adventured hard on our bikes at some point in our lives. We exhilarated at balancing without an adult hanging onto our seat. We flaunted our independence on our first ride around the block. We rode without hands and adorned our bikes with flapping playing cards, horns and tassels (ok I am dating myself). We pedaled to the homes of our best friends or middle school…

We flaunted our independence on our first ride around the block. We rode without hands and adorned our bikes with flapping playing cards, horns and tassels (ok I am dating myself). We pedaled to the homes of our best friends or middle school boy/girlfriends, to school, our teenage jobs, and college classes. Some of us race, mountain bike, or fly on bmx. I ride to my studio on a dirt path through red cliffs and pine trees.

Enjoy the adventure in this shop.

I adventure in many media, including watercolor, acrylic, scratchboard and collage. The "medium is the message," to quote another - Marshall McLuhan. A watercolor painting versus an acrylic painting of the same subject will convey a different message and a different feeling to you. So, occasionally I paint something multiple times in mulitiple media just to fully discover it.
