ARTIST'S STATEMENT:

Having always been interested in the texture of paper and the multiple ways it is used, working with this medium as an artist only seems natural.

Playing with paper since childhood and a love of corresponding with friends and family led to the idea of making my own greeting cards in 2004. Using water color paint and hand cut black panels gives the work a unique stained glass characteristic.

In a quest to discover more about my family’s history, I came across old letters and notebooks as well as old scrapbooks and photographs; these reveal interesting stories of lives long ago.

Journaling, inspired by a dynamic high school teacher, combined with my interest in creating albums of personal and family photos led to the creation of my own handmade books and boxes beginning in 2006. This passion continues to evolve as I learn as much as I can about this ancient art form. I love incorporating old buttons, maps, photos, books, and other materials with previous lives into my work.

Outside of art, I am an elementary teacher. When discussing letter writing and journaling with students, I share that cards, letters, journals and other forms of paper communication can last for centuries. It is my hope that people will create and write about their own lives, leaving a lasting imprint for future generations. So as you chose one of my handmade products, may your written contribution to the book or card bring life to a treasured natural resource for years to come.
