I have been throwing pots my whole adult life. I have tried lots of different styles and techniques. It seems that there are always some kind of signs and symbols involved. Animals of all kinds, both as drawings on clay and as sculptural additions, keep appearing in my work. There is such satisfaction starting with a primal earthy ball of clay and ending with a permanent object of fired ceramics. I have an outdoor area where I throw my pots (hey it is California). It is such a blissful experience covered in clay and looking out into the garden
A few years ago, I started working in cast paper. Once again, there is clay involved. I start by making a sculpted clay relief, make a mold, and press wet paper pulp into the mold. When it dries, it peels out like a piece of paper. They are finished with gesso and paint, often trying to make the work look like bronze. I have one popular image of a Degas ballerina…
