My background is in archaeology and anthropology in college, working on several digs in Oregon and Alaska. In the late 1960s I acquired a huge (and people-powered) Chandler & Price printing press, made wood engravings, set type, and printed greeting cards and wedding invitations. I also worked on lineolum block prints, printing on fabric. After that, unfortunately, I didn't do much with art until more recently, when I discovered clay about 4 years ago, and instantly became addicted. I haven't used a wheel yet, working only with hand-built things.
I'm very attracted to the Arts & Crafts style of design -- art, houses, decoration, etc., and have been using some of those designs in clay, carving the designs into linoleum blocks, then pressing them into the damp clay to make an indented design. Recently I've added other ancient designs that appeal to me, including Mexican stamp designs…
