Mary Kenyon's Profile

About

My name is Mary Kenyon I am a s ingle mother, home daycare owner and professional quilt artist.

As a 3rd generation quilter I have always loved and appreciated the skill it takes to work with fabric. However my interest in the arts originally began with painting and print making. It did not occur to me that I could combine my two loves until 2002. At the time I was working in a high end tattoo studio and was encouraged by one of the artists to create a quilt with tattoo imagery. The coffin shaped quilt was extremely popular. So much so that I created an entire line of "Coffin Quilts" each one designed by a well know tattoo artist. I received a lot of publicity and had many successful, exciting years traveling the country and working in the tattoo industry.

Later in 2010 I began working and teaching in a local quilt shop. During this time my style of quilting changed dramatically. I was surrounded by so many talented women each with there own style of quilting. The quality of my quilts increased as I learned many new skills and techniques. Up until now I had been entirely self taught. It was at this time that I began drawing my own images and as a result my quilts took on a richer more romantic feel. "Moon Crane" was the first of these. As my confidence in my work increased I began entering and was accepted to several national quilt shows.

As an artist I view fabric as my pallet. I am inspired by deep, bold colors. I also seek out fabrics that have rich textures. I feel they give an extra level depth to my work. Currently my favorite subject matter is nature. I have recently begun a a new series of animal quilts focusing on motherhood. I will be continuing and expanding this theme throughout the next few years. As my life and surroundings change so do my inspirations. As a result my quilt art continues to evolve. I never know what will inspire me next and I always look forward to the next chapter.

Aside from quilts I also enjoy making all kinds handmade accessories like aprons bags and bibs which I also list form time to time. I have also made a number of T-shirt and memorial quilts which can be viewed on my Facebook page or at www.coffinquilts.com
