About

Hi I'm Charlotte.
Welcome to the shop! I work out of my home in the country, in the heart of the Finger Lakes region of Central New York, an area known for its beautiful lakes and gorges. For as long as I can remember, I've loved and made art. Like Harold from "Harold and the Purple Crayon" (a favorite childhood book) I've always seen art as a good tool for navigating life. For the past 17 years, I've taught art in a middle school, where having a sense of humor, and being a little "off center" were job requisites.
During those years, I've tried to balance teaching with my other loves: my family, painting, jewelry making, running, making music, travel, gardening, baking, and more. (Lest that sounds too holy... I've become hooked on a reality dancing show, and I windowshop aimlessly between appointments.) Recently, I retired from teaching, and I'm thrilled to have the time…

I've become hooked on a reality dancing show, and I windowshop aimlessly between appointments.) Recently, I retired from teaching, and I'm thrilled to have the time and energy to focus on earring and jewelry design.
The technique I use to create the earrings developed through trial and error over time, resulting in a style that I think is quite unique. When people ask, I can't decide whether to characterize the earrings as funky, or elegant (maybe funky-elegant)?
I begin by using watercolors to paint images and designs on watercolor paper. Sometimes I use pastels, crayons, pens, and acrylics as well. I'm inspired by so many things, but COLOR is usually the driving force. The next step is one of my favorites. I search for "compositions" in the larger works. I love the challenge of finding the right balance of color, shape, and movement within each earring, and then matching that closely with its pair. The next steps involve: cutting, layering, sanding, more painting (the backs), sealing with acrylic for water protection, and finishing with findings, and bead and/or wire details.
Why Compliments Fly? The earrings "complement" what you wear, and they are as light as a feather! My mom used to use the expression: "Compliments fly as quality meets" and I've been told that people receive compliments when they wear them. I hope the quality and style reflect yours, and they are just what you were looking for!
