Melanie R. Bird's Profile

About

I was born Melanie Ruth Urban (you can call me Mel), in San Diego, California, to missionary parents (Ed & Gwen), who carted me off to Taiwan, where I received a baby sister and learned a little Chinese. While my dad was hiking the mountains, creating written languages, and translating the Bible for Wyclif, my mom was coping at home with the babies.

After three years, it was California, here we come, just in time for the Berkeley Free Speech Movement. Consequently, mom & dad packed us kids, into a Volkswagen Bug and headed for a more conservative east coast. We crossed the Painted Desert, picked up hitch hiking Indians and saw the Grand Canyon too.

Once in Fairfax, Virginia, mom and dad got jobs teaching at a Christian School, where sis and I were promptly enrolled. Dad hung out a shingle and started a church .... mom played the piano and we all did a lot of singing.

Just a few short years later, our family moved to the nearby town of Leesburg, Va with our church and a brand new Christian School. We were in the country and learned to love small town life. And there the two little girls grew up, until one day, a young man was hired to teach English. A son of missionary parents (Herbert & Mary), he grew up in Ethiopia, where his father translated the Gospel of John into the ancient language of Tigrinya and both parents worked at Mihereta Jesus (The Compassion of Jesus Medical Facility). David Bird became a big part of this kids future. We were married with God's blessing and our parent's too.

During my high school years, I had taken private art lessons, since I was no good at the piano, and once graduated, I took courses at community college and art museums.

Two boys were born to us in Virginia (Joshua & Jesse). Soon after, David took a job at a Christian School in Wilmington, DE, where we have lived and worked since 1984. There, we had two more boys (Caelen & Jonathan). I picked up housekeeping jobs for private individuals and estates. Eventually, I worked for former Governor Pete DuPont.

Since moving to Delaware, three of our sons have married ..... yes, two met local girls. One was so local, she lived next door. In fact, the day we moved in, she looked out her window at the four young males unpacking the van, pointed to Caelen and said, "That one." They were married in August 2008. In fact, she is responsible for the design and photography in my shop. Check out Samantha Bird Design and Samantha Bird Photography..... she has also produced 2 of my five grand children.

My interests are primarily, knitting, French embroidery, crochet & writing. I have a book online; Christmas With Giselle (Prologue, I Had A Dream & 12 chapters for the 12 days of Christmas, unedited, but it's free, it's an allegory). I also write screenplays. I am of French ancestry and knitting was something that I began, many years ago, when I was pregnant.

I've taught a variety of bible classes to women and children, from the church to Community Bible Study, to inner city outreach, volunteered with Catholic Charities and AIDs patients, worked overseas with Compassion Corp .... published the church news, (I blog) And I love Jesus, my Good Shepherd and Lover of my soul. I have been forgiven and redeemed, by the blood of Christ. I am not my own, but belong to the One, who uses even my troubles and sadness as a Beatitude. When I die and wake in glory, I hope to see his face, for I know my Redeemer lives. Fav Bible verse: "In My Father's house are many mansions; If it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you, That where I am you may be also." John 14:2.

God Bless.
