At the tender age of six, I found myself in a bit of a pickle. As usual, I’d left the delicate task of buying my mum’s birthday present to the last minute. Uh oh. I was going to have to make something! I raced to my room as fast as my little legs could carry me and rummaged through the craft paraphernalia I had. In a cloud of panic and rising blood pressure (which probably isn’t healthy for a six-year-old), I managed to fold a piece of paper into something resembling a half-finished flamingo, and I stuck it onto a card. It was horrible. Covered in paper and glitter glue, and apologising profusely, I gave my creation to my mum. Amongst all the flowers and boxes of York Fruits, she said…

Amongst all the flowers and boxes of York Fruits, she said something I least expected: “I love it”.

Almost two decades on, I may not be an astronaut or gaining free access to museum exhibitions, but I am putting a smile on people’s faces. I’m pleased to say that my origami skills have improved dramatically, and even now, every fold takes me back to the early 90s. The Good Fold Days.
