Diarmuid Beckett's Profile

About

About me:
My name is Diarmuid Beckett and I was born and live in the small city of Cork on the southern coast of Ireland. Here in my workshop in Cork I make the silver, stone and enamel jewellery which you see photographed in my shop.
I started making jewellery about 15 years ago but I was attracted to jewellery and markets for a long time before that. I spent some time in South America and Argentina in particular during the '90s and I was often struck by the quality and authenticity of some of the markets there. Years later discovering Etsy was for me like rediscovering an authentic market place that dealt in hand crafted products.

About me:

I started making jewellery about 15 years ago but I was attracted to jewellery and markets for a long time before that. I spent some time in South America and Argentina in particular during the '90s and I was often struck by the quality and authenticity of some of the markets there. Years later discovering Etsy was for me like rediscovering an authentic market place that dealt in hand crafted products.

About my work:
Colour is the most important thing in my work. With many of my stone pieces, pendants studs and drop earrings, a minimum of silver is used and as much as possible of the stone shines out. I use all genuine gemstones from authentic lapidaries and never use reconstituted stones.
The energy of the stones I am using is also a very important factor for me. Each stone gives off a particular energy, something you become more conscious of as you are in contact with them.
Another aspect of the stones that I am interested in is the stone's texture. It is a fine thing and another aspect of stones that you become more aware of with time. The 10X loop helps here.
Regarding my enamel pieces colour is again at the heart of things. With enamel work I build up the colour in layers as I re-fire the piece in my small enamel kiln. I use both opaque and transparent enamels and as the layers build up the colours get manipulated. It doesn't always work out as planned, in fact it rarely does, however this is part of the beauty of it. Each piece takes off on a journey and you only realize that you've reached the end of the journey when you get there. At the moment I am concentrating on cloisonne enamelling where the cloisonnes of enamel colour are seperated by fine silver wires.

So that's me and my colourfull pieces. I hope you will enjoy my shop.

I am also on Etsy under the username: enamelsilverandgold
