Frank Phelps' Profile
Even as a kid I was always involved in some artistic endeavor. But it seems more recently I’ve been drawn specifically to wood. Beside just being pleasant to the eye wood has a practical value as well.
As a child, my daughter and her friends liked to go on a “treasure hunt,” and I was happy to set it up for them. And as they got older and smarter I made the hunt more sophisticated. Thus came the Cypher Wheel. I guess I got a little carried away.
My father had polio as a young man and as he grew older he experienced a great deal of pain in his leg and consequently he developed a limp. He was using some ugly store bought cane to get around and I thought my dad deserved a little more style. So I made him a fancy stick with some character and he enjoyed it more than any gift I had ever given him- then I made some more.
The truth is I enjoy making beautiful articles with lasting value, something you can…
