I grew up in an artistic family in southern Arizona. My Dad had an art degree (though he worked in construction) and my two younger sisters were both art teachers. I was a science major (no artistic training past eighth grade) in college but ended up working as a carpenter and retiring from the shipping dept of a large defense contractor. I have been working with desert woods (desert ironwood, cat claw, mesquite, black walnut, cholla cactus skeletons and saguaro cactus ribs) from the Tucson area for over 40 years. I design and make Desert Ironwood (one the world’s most beautiful woods) jewelry. I have been told they have a bit of a Native American motif, maybe a result of my scant Cherokee heritage and growing up in the southwest. Until my retirement in September 2011, I always gave away my creations to family and friends. Now I have the time to broaden my horizons. I have a small space on our back patio to do my work so I…
