I was born and raised in Japan and came to the United States at the age of 19 to study at a college in Virginia.
I began my studies in a completely different field, but I quickly realized that I didn't want to waste my time studying something to attain a job that won't make me happy. I wanted a career in something I really love to do. So I changed my major to Fine Arts. It may be much harder to make a living as an artist, but I am truly happy and fulfilled with what I do, which is creating something that started out as an imaginary, invisible idea and give it a life through clay and metalsmithing.
For my ceramics pieces, I don't usually just glaze, I love to draw using underglazes. I draw whatever is on my mind onto bowls, plates, and cups. Although I sometimes draw a sketch beforehand, I often feel differently when I sit down and look…
