Daisy's Profile

About

Hi, I'm Daisy! I've spent my life looking at things and saying, "I could make that." While other kids were watching "MTV", I was glued to "The Home Show". I'm that idea-person friends turn to in a pinch. If I'm not orchestrating the hustle and bustle of my busy family, I can always be found doing something creative.

No shrinking violet, I was always the go-getter, and the consummate student. After several years in retail in my teens and early twenties, Distinctly Daisy was brought to fruition as a hobby sculpting Friendly Plastic and beading, selling in Hallmark Stores and little boutiques scattered across the Chicago suburbs. I graduated college with a degree in Marketing and a minor in Art, as it was my ultimate passion.

My Day Jobs

My invested few years as an executive for a Public Relations firm tapped into my creative cache, but I still wanted to roll up my sleeves and get into it. Motherhood gave me more than ample opportunity to do that, and I found myself again in school projects. For 8 years, I earned my keep as a Kitchen Designer, my other passion of Interior Design. My son's teachers kept looking to me whenever their Art teacher was out sick, so with a nudge, I became a teacher. Now, I'm a stay-at-home mommy again with a little more time on my hands (at least during naptime) and I'm a certified instructor for Jewelry Design and Crochet for Michaels Craft Stores. I'm eager to share my creativity in the whims that seem to make friends oh and ah. Watch me blossom.

I am a licensed business owner for the state of Arizona and local cities.

My Keepsakes

As a child of the 70s, I wore hand-crocheted ponchos my mother made and learned to finger-crochet when I was a little girl. After some guidance from my mother-in-law and grandmother-in-law, I've been making blankets for family and friends' babies for nearly 15 years. What I have developed is a way to crochet on crochet, like crocheted appliques, so I can add personalization through shapes or words or names to make each blanket unique. My fluffy blankets have been family favorites for years, and my beanies are all around fun! Fun to make and fun for your little cuties to wear.

I started creating and hand-painting ornaments as a tradition for my nieces and nephews. When they are grown and have their own first trees, they will already have a box full of memories and Aunt Daisy's ornaments to hang on them.

My Materials

I haven't reinvented the wheel. This nostaligic art has been using Acrylic yarn safely for generations. My yarn used is a safe lead-free, phthlate-free producer of consumer craft products and children's textile products. I buy my yarn at my local Michael's Craft Store just like any homemaker would. http://www.cpsc.gov/about/cpsia/apparel.html
I prefer to use Acrylic yarn for its easy care and durability to last generations (I've never known anyone to throw away a blanket). It is available in a palate of colors and textures and the baby yarns are super soft.

The non-toxic acrylic paints I use on my ornaments and woodwork as also safely CPSC compliant. http://beccijo.com/content/index2.php?option=com_content&do_pdf=1&id=47

This all gives me peace of mind that I'm creating safe keepsakes I can be proud to make and share with you.

Thanks for coming to visit. I hope you find a special keepsake in Distinctly Daisy.
