Steve McCoy's Profile

About

My interest in leather products goes back to the mid 60's. I remember going with my father to the shoe repair shop to have a custom sheath made for a large butcher knife that he used when he BBQ'd. I remember the smell of the shop, the leather, the dyes, the adhesives, the aroma of wax based finishes. I was impressed by the old equipment in the shop and how those old machines would turn a few pieces of leather into something close to a work of art.

As an Art/Photography Major in college, I explored most of the mediums available in my course of study, Oil Painting, Acrylics, Water Colors, Clay, Serigraphs and much later, Stained Glass. I owned a Stained Glass business thru the 70's and 80's and moved into custom doors, windows and furniture in the late 80's and 90's.
In 1997, I discovered SASS, and Cowboy Action Shooting and my interests moved quickly…

In 1997, I discovered SASS, and Cowboy Action Shooting and my interests moved quickly to Custom Gunleather and Accouterments, related to Competitive Shooting and Period Correct Gun Leather. I was spending a lot of time at shooting competitions around the state and eventually decided to start building my own Holsters and Gun Belts. As a shooter, I felt that I had some insight as to how a "rig" should function to the best advantage of the shooter. I built several rigs for myself and a few friends and before long, it had become a profitable business. After
"retiring" from a day job in 2007, I directed most of my attention to competitive shooting and building Custom Gunleather and related products.

I still work out of a small, one man shop and like the old shoe repair man back in the 60's, I cut everything by hand and do all the embellishing and finishing myself. It's been a lot of fun and I am proud to say that at least 60 percent of my clients are repeat customers and regularly commission me to do their custom work. I look forward to expanding my product line and meeting new people thru Etsy.

Please, feel free to contact me regarding a custom product, whether shooting related, or just something made out of leather.

That sheath still holds the Butcher Knife in my fathers kitchen.
