I own a small organic farm and woodshop surrounded by the Olympic National Forest in Washington State.

Most items are created from construction scrap or found materials. The figured maple that is showcased in some of the projects is material that didn't make the cut for export instrument wood. Resources are precious and we like treating them that way.

The process of producing figured maple projects begins with finding green maple that looks promising. Quality figured maple is rare-some say 1 in 20 trees have it. The maple is rough cut with a chainsaw and stacked in a covered area to slow dry for a year or more. It is then brought inside, remilled....and finally used in the woodworking that you see.

I also make birdhouses from old growth cedar scrap. Old growth trees are sometimes 100s of years old. They grew slowly and are much higher in quality than trees growing today. Cedar has a high oil content that helps it resist rot and bug damange.
