Sonya Edwards' Profile

About

I bought some beads to give to my artist friend who was making masks for a youth show in San Francisco in 2004 - she never got them. I fell in love with beads. They are such a wonderful media for creating. If I create something and it doesn't look right, I can recycle them into something new. Ironically, I hardly wore any jewelry before I started making it.

Over the years, I've collected many beautiful beads and learned a vast array of techniques ranging from bead weaving, beaded embroidery, stringing, wire wrapping, kumihimo braiding, and so on. I was fortunate to have a mom who is an artist and who taught me color theory and the elements of design.

I'm also on FB and have a web site (but I can't share the address here - against Etsy's Terms of Use)

My work has been featured in several galleries and retail stores. In August 2011, I decided to open an Etsy store to reach a broader audience.

I am also a musician. I play violin and mandolin, have written a few original songs, and have played in two local bands: Playin' Hooky and Sidekick Bluegrass Band.

I enjoy travelling and scouting out new bead stores, galleries, antique stores and thrift stores. I find inspiration in nature, textile patterns such as Persian carpets, architecture and old books. I have been studying the art of jewelry design since 2004 and have edited several jewelry making instructions in books that have been published.
