MaryKate and Mike's Profile

About

For the last several years, by husband and I have been crafting garb, gear, and props for LARPers, cos-players, historical re-enactors, and the like. There has been a growing interest in this type of hobby over the last few years, which prompted us to start selling our goods to a wider audience on ETSY. As LARPers ourselves, we know that finding quality garb and gear at a reasonable price can be difficult. We try to use our own experiences and those of our friends in our LARP communities to make a quality product that will look good, be comfortable, and stand the test of time. So whether you participate in LARP, Dagorhir, SCA, Renaissance Faires, Cos-play, or are just looking for a Halloween costume, we can help make you look the part!

So, a little bit about us:

As far as our crafting history, I started sewing about 7 years ago and found that costuming was a great way to hone my skills. I spent the first few years making costumes and props for the LARP I attend (Kingdoms of Novitas - kingdomsofnotivas.net - check them out!) and have since become head of our Props and Atmosphere team. I'm mostly self-taught, but I regularly take on new types of projects to "cut my teeth" on new techniques, finishing touches, and types of clothing. I have really grown in the last few years as I’ve done more custom orders for friends and since we’ve opened our ETSY store. I enjoy making my own patterns and reverse engineering costuming so I can replicate historical garb. I also try my hand at various other crafts - wands, rods, "treasure" type objects. Really, in the end, our hobby is a wonderful excuse for me to experiment and learn how to work with new materials and mediums to create unique items.

My husband, Mike, has been working with leather for about 8 years. His first project was a leather on leather coat of plates chest armor, so… he likes a challenge. =) He is also always trying to learn something new and increase his skillset. There isn't a week that goes by when we don't "have" to stop at the leather shop and pick up a new stamp, dye, or tool. His pieces tend towards utility and simplicity in design rather than ornate, but he can do tooling and stamping if the need arises. His projects are all "finished" leather goods, meaning that any chicago screws used will be glued with lock-tight, edges will be slicked, and the leather will be hand dyed and sealed. (If you don't know what that means, it's ok. It means it's good quality and looks good and that's really all that matters.)

A little bit about us personally, we live in Upstate New York and just recently bought our first home. We each attend a different LARP (mine in Upstate NY and his in Northern PA) nearly every month so someone is always home to take care of our “kid” (9 year old Welsh Corgi named Kiki). Mike is part of our local Dagorhir chapter as are many of our friends. We enjoy tabletop games and all other sorts of geekery. My husband has a degree in Forestry and I have a degree in Archaeology... and we're bankers. Go figure that we seek out a little escapism in our hobbies. =) My goal, currently, is to be able to devote myself to our crafting full-time.

So, welcome to our store. I hope you find lots of things that you like to outfit yourself for your LARP, Dagohrir, SCA, or Renaissance Faire. We aim to please! Enjoy!
