Neale LaSalle's Profile

About

Neale LaSalle creates ceramic pieces that pay homage to the beauty of DownEast Maine.

I resided in VT for many years before moving to Demopolis, AL with my College sweetheart Anna Woolf. I met Anna in Ceramics class at Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. I resided in VT for many years before moving to Demopolis, AL with my College sweetheart Anna Woolf. I met Anna in Ceramics class at Goddard College in Plainfield, VT. We got married in AL, and then moved to Ellsworth, Maine to start a family. I have always appreciated the inherent beauty of nature and have found peace in its embrace. I respect all of this world’s incredibly diverse forms of art. I graduated with a BA in Fine Arts with my focus being in Coil-building and Glaze Chemistry, from Goddard College. Neale and Anna (who also graduated from Goddard) have a pottery studio in their Ellsworth home, where they teach, work and play.

I hand build from thin slabs and rolled cylinders, adorning my work with carved details and hand-formed elements. To each piece I dedicate a good deal of time, forming and adding details until the piece is finished. Each piece evolves on its own as I listen to the clay. This is the main reason why each piece has a singular attitude. Natural textures and imagery can also be found in my work. My pieces may appear imperfect or show blemishes, but these are not mistakes: all marks and asymmetries are necessary, as my art is created thusly.
