With my background as a marine fisheries scientist and fisherman, I have always been interested in fish. I began printing fish in 1968 while I was a graduate student at Humboldt State University. In 1976 I co-founded the Nature Printing Society which has remained an active and vibrant organization.

I work in both the direct and indirect method of Japanese fish printing or gyotaku. The direct method involves applying inks directly to the object, placing fine paper over the object, and then transferring the inks by gently rubbing the paper with my fingers. The indirect method involves placing the paper or fabric over the object, moistening it, and molding the paper or fabric to the object. Then small tampos are used to apply inks gently on the surface. Only the eye is hand painted.

I am a member of The Artery, an artist cooperative in Davis, California, and regularly participate in solo and group shows. My works also are at the Ren Brown Collection Gallery in Bodega Bay, California.

I enjoy sharing my love of fish and other objects from nature through my art.
