David Barnes' Profile

About

Hi, Dave here. I am a writer, avid sea kayaker, and artisan blessed to be living on the west coast of Canada. Living in such a natural setting all of my life has given me a deep appreciation of the simple beauty all around me. My two passions, kayaking and working with my hands grew out of these experiences in nature.

Living on the coast has also shown me the harsh reality of the industrial age in which we all live and the sometimes devastating impact created by our all encompassing needs for things. The earth is not a place of perpetual unlimited resources yet we continue to treat it as such.

I created Foundwood as a reaction to what I have seen and to lower my impact on my part of the planet. The motto of the workshop is, "Nothing new will come through the doors". The wood used in my offerings to you come from wood found, but not on the racks and piles of my local lumberyard. Instead, the wood I use is gathered from scraps, driftwood, windfall branches and any recyclable material I can reclaim without too much extra labour.

Please enjoy a browse around my shop. In it you will find more than just woodcraft. As my inspiration grows, so will the shop. As with life, the creative process is slow and full of learning experences. Check back often to see what I have been up to in my backyard workshop.
