Although art had always been an avocation for me, primarily watercolor, creating jewelry came later thanks to two experiences. Being introduced to Australian opal I quickly developed a serious case of “opal fever” – the intense love for the world’s most beautiful gem! And after a lost wax casting and stone setting workshop I was hooked on metalsmithing.
As with working metal, I take care and pride in my stone cutting. I cut almost exclusively Australian rough opal. Many of my opals are freeform shapes for two reasons. One, freeforms generally lend themselves to much more interesting jewelry designs. Two, precious opal is a valuable gemstone. I try not to cut away good fire just to achieve a standard shape.
