Hi, my name is Gary.

Although art had always been an avocation for me, primarily watercolor, creating jewelry came later thanks to two experiences. Being introduced to Australian opal I quickly developed a serious case of “opal fever” – the intense love for the world’s most beautiful gem! And after a lost wax casting and stone setting workshop I was hooked on metalsmithing.

As with working metal, I take care and pride in my stone cutting. I cut almost exclusively Australian rough opal. Many of my opals are freeform shapes for two reasons.

One, freeforms generally lend themselves to much more interesting jewelry designs. Two, precious opal is a valuable gemstone. I try not to cut away good fire just to achieve a standard shape. I polish my opals to a surface so fine that it approaches the resolution limit of optical microscopes.

I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about opal.

Most of my work is in sterling silver but I also work in gold. In addition to opal, my jewelry features natural, colored gemstones such as tourmaline, garnet, sapphire, ruby, and others, as well as diamonds. I also design with cabochons that I purchase from other Etsy sellers.

About half of my business is from requests for custom pieces, a process that my customers and I both find very rewarding. My customers have been delighted with their choices and that is always my goal.

All of my work is handmade by me by fabrication or casting, or a combination of the two. And if your piece happens to have an opal, I made that for you, too!

I hope that you like what you see. Thanks for stopping by.
