How we came to be a "Gingerbread" Business . . .

The idea for The Gingerbread Keepsakes TM actually arose from a family tradition that began in 1997, a few days after Thanksgiving. The entire day they worked around the table together creating one-of-a-kind ornaments with unique outfits and decorative additions. ”At the time I did not realize we were also creating one-of-a-kind memories that would last a lifetime.” Says Kymberlee.

Year after year Mom and Grandma decorated their Christmas trees with these beautiful hand-made ornaments. The first few years we would laugh about the mistakes we made, but then when my sister and I left for college we would reminisce of the precious family time spent together. As the years passed the “Gingerbread Christmas Tree,” as we called it, became more a family symbol than simply a Christmas decoration.

In 2006, my Mom called me devastated because that year when she opened her plastic tote of gingerbread ornaments they crumbled in her hand leaving only the wire hangers. Her voice quivered while she riffled though her destroyed collection. Not only were the cookies destroyed but also our fond memories. My heart broke. A million thoughts raced through my head. How could this happen? We preserved the cookies for so long. We can make more to replace the old ones, but how will we prevent this from happening again.

The following year Grandma went through the same disappointment. At this point I knew it was time to do something. Mom and Grandma were planning to bake another batch of real gingerbread cookies to decorate and preserve, but I was secretly planning to make the gingerbread cookies from clay. I knew these “clay cookies” would last beyond our lifetime and could truly be a family heirloom. I wanted to surprise Mom and Grandma for Christmas, however I had to let my secret out before they invested their time and energy into another set of disappearing gingerbread cookies.

With our busy schedules it was a more difficult to get together, but we scheduled a day to once again gather at my Mom’s dining room table. The stacks of blank cookies once again begged us for life and personality though color and decoration. After painting 300 gingerbread ornaments we were filled with joy. We painted enough ornaments to fill Grandma’s tree, Mom’s tree, a garland for my sister and a tree of my own. Tears of joy streamed down my face. This time our hand-painted ornaments and our memories were indestructible.

The tradition of a "gingerbread" Christmas has touched my family and brought us many cherished memories. The Gingerbread Keepsake Collection is our way of sharing our heartfelt “sweets and treats” with your home. Thankfully, you will never have to open your Christmas box to find crumbs!
