I learned to sew in 7th grade. It was a required class back then. I loved sewing. It allowed me to expand my wardrobe.
My mother was a single parent with two children to raise. She was always looking for creative ways to stretch a dollar. She was also a sewist. One of the things we used to do was buy bed linens and drapery when they'd go on final clearance. The unusual fabrics made for interesting sewing.
I made my first jacket in the 8th grade. I made it from a bedspread. The jacket was lined and had a zipper. I'd done a really good job and I was very proud. I wore it to school, and I got several compliments. Then someone said they had a bedspread from that same fabric. I was horrified. The person who made the comment didn't make the connection. It was just an observation. But I never wore that jacket again…
