Gitas Portal's Profile

About

I have always had a pretty good imagination and a knack for creating too. This was put to good use when my mum gave me my first wooden, hand peddled Singer machine at the age of 12 - a big step up from the usual needle and thread creations and repairs. My afternoons running in the yard in Sierra Leone with my brothers and sisters was now spent working this machine. My first machine creation was a pair of blue pyjama trousers for my younger brother - a bit ill-fitting, but I was proud.

After many experiments and compliments along the way, I decided to start Gitas Portal - a brand for contemporary African clothing and accessories. After many experiments and compliments along the way, I decided to start Gitas Portal - a brand for contemporary African clothing and accessories. Named after my daughter, Gita (acronym for: God Is Truly Amazing), the brand offered an opportunity for me to share my passion for feminine and beautiful clothes with a touch of a home made feel. 'Common', some of you may remember mum's and grandmum's sewing - and the one-off creations that came off that old sewing machine - perhaps passed on from grandma to mum. All well made with love.

I love what I do and I bring my cultural influences (African, Barbadian, British) and experiences of living in the USA into my pieces. It's in the prints, the cut, the colours, the through back to certain genres of fashion.

I'm truly grateful to all who wear my designs with pride and the beautiful comments that echo what I aim to achieve in every design: good quality, beautiful pieces made with lovely fabrics on the back of good service.
