Cleo Dunsmore Buchanan's Profile
Grama Tortoise is a reference to an African folktale. A young woman is given a necklace by a giant desert tortoise, and when she wears it, her family and friends do not recognize her, they see her as a goddess. When she removes the necklace, disaster ensues, as the villagers accuse her of deceiving them. The tortoise tells her, “You were never supposed to take the necklace off. It shows you as you truly are.”
I am a wildlife glass artist, and I like my work to be functional. I prefer statement necklaces, and enjoy designing and wearing my own work. I make a piece because I am burning to tell a story, and to commemorate the experience of learning that story, or that lesson. I want that necklace to wear over my heart, to hold when I need its strength, and to share that message with the world around me.
