Elizabeth Cadd's Profile

About

I work in England as an artist, woodland worker and all round crafts woman. I'm a spinner, weaver and natural dyer, using the colours from nature (e.g. berries, bark, leaf dyes) in my work. I make blankets, handspun art yarns, and handwoven cushions. My work has an earthy, organic feel to it, but still very contemporary - I love the textures and colours of raw materials and working with my hands.

I am also an artist and have designed a series of Woodland Arts and Crafts Workshops for schools and festivals, one of these is called 'Weaving with Nature'. These hands on activities bring people in touch with natural materials in a meaningful and creative way.

I believe in an ethical, low impact way of working sustainably with the wood, or wool, so quite often I'm using whatever is available to me at the time…

In woodturning I use 'green' timber - freshly felled and use the natural shrinkage of the wood to make strong joints in chairs or interesting features like oval shaped bowls. There is no electric power in my woodland workshop, using instead only hand tools, a foot powered lathe similar to that which would have been used in the medieval times and hand forged tools. This is a green business and as Eco-friendly as it gets! It is also extremely rewarding for the soul. I hope you appreciate my work, thanks for looking!
