Dichroic glass is one of our most popular materials, and is used frequently in the creation of some of our extraordinarily beautiful and unique jewelry. Its characteristics include brilliant color and an unmistakable sparkle and shimmer. Dichroic glass, also called “Dichro”, is glass treated with various layers of metal oxides to make it appear to have many colors. Developed by NASA for use in the American space program, dichroic glass is now popular as a jewelry and art material. The name comes from a Greek word meaning “two colors.” In the 20th century, NASA began experimenting with treated glass to make astronaut face-plates that would block harmful spectrums of light. They developed a process that created dichroic glass, which uses fine layers of metal oxides to fracture and separate lightwaves. The resulting substance is used on a variety of objects, such as satellite mirrors and scientific instruments. It is also found on commercial products such as mirrors and camcorder lenses.Dichroic glass in its raw form is created by using several metals, including aluminum, chromium, silicon, zirconium or the metal alloy titanium. Metallic oxides are bonded to the glass in ultra-thin layers. Once the coating has adhered to the glass, it is fired in a kiln to make it permanent. The angles of the glass within the vacuum chamber in which the metals are bonded to the glass determine the color. The colors are almost holographic in appearance. In actuality, there is no color produced. The visible “color” is actually manipulation of light, and will vary depending on whether the light is reflected or transmitted. Each piece of dichroic glass has at least three colors: the color that reflects from the glass, the color of the glass, and a second refracted color that can be seen at a 45 degree angle.Working with dichroic glass in heat can be tricky. The colors actually “shift” and often times change. Two separate pieces cut from the same glass can fire blue or purple! Sometimes one of each! Dichroic glass can also be fused with other glass of the same co efficiency, with the time and temperature having a large impact on the final result. Due to variations beyond the artists’ control - even the slightest temperature fluctuation can vary the appearance of the finished product - every piece of finished dichroic glass art is unique and can never be identically reproduced.
