Heather McMillen's Profile

About

I am a Southerner who landed in Los Angeles in 2000. My earliest memories are of taking mental snapshots of the world around me, collecting images I wanted to remember. I’m intrigued by other people, and I spend a lot of time studying them. I’ve traveled extensively, and I believe the experiences I’ve had have sharpened my ability to create portraits from a place of understanding.

I view drawing and painting as an access point, an empathic foray into to the heart of my subjects. Typically, I’m more interested in individuals than in groups. For me, making art is a means to express and celebrate individuality and emotional intensity, which is why I often choose subjects from either the people and objects of my everyday life..or from artists or films that have inspired me.

In my finer moments, my life can be pretty well…

In my finer moments, my life can be pretty well summed up with a mixture of Fleetwood Mac, C.C.R., Bob Dylan and Neil Young lyrics. I'm a fan of wine, art books, and paint brushes. If you are brave, creative and have integrity I salute you.

Heather’s work is smart, beautifully inspired and exquisitely executed. Her understanding of form, lighting, color and composition is near perfection, and her ability to capture true emotion behind her characters really sets her work apart. As a commissioned artist, she has an incredible ability to read her customers and create a personal piece to their taste. I am proud to have several of her pieces on my walls, both big and small and I look forward to having more!

I have commissioned Heather for multiple projects over the past 10 years, from a book cover illustration, to company logos, to album packaging & artwork for my husband’s bands, including both graphic design and portraiture. Heather is not only incredibly talented, she is professional and easy to work with. She works closely with us to ensure that her vision is the same as ours, delivers work in a timely manner, and always exceeds our expectations. I would highly recommend Heather for any portrait, design or illustration work.

“Hire Heather. That’s really all you need to know, but I’ll say more because, well, I’m a writer. Heather has an intuitive nature. We immediately connected and her background in psychology helped tremendously in conveying the idea for my book cover. She showed me several examples before we agreed on the final design and it turned out better than I could have imagined.”

Heather’s talent doesn’t simply come from her skilled technique. The unique way that she views, hears and exists in the world seem to have a sweeping affect on her creative process. She’s not just an artist; she’s a storyteller.
