About

I am a Registered Nurse (RN, BSN) and have worked in various ICUs for most of my 17-year career. It is pretty stressful and I have always found that having a creative outlet helps me wind down and truly relax (gardening, painting, making dolls, pounding metal). It also makes me a good person to help with medical IDs, as I've been in the business of Medical for so long...long enough to be ready for a change! I still work as an RN, home health for the past few months caring for special babies on life support in their homes.
I am also a mother of four, currently 16, 14, 14 (yep, twins), and 8. They keep me busy as well, but they go to school and I have some time on my hands every day. I need an excuse to avoid housework maybe. Definitely not my thing! The kids have an arts and crafts center set up in my Studio, and we spend many hours down there one on one. Which is a challenge when there are so many. They are…

I moved to Texas from Northern California about 5 years ago and the heat here (and the deer and the lack of soil...) pretty much forced me to quit serious gardening. Fortunately, I planted many MANY native species on my acreage, and I may be the only one in the neighborhood with blooming flowers in this drought now! I am really glad I worked so hard that first year, because I'm done and it pretty much takes care of itself now.
Anyway, I had all this time on my hands that I used to spend in the garden and I had this little outbuilding on the back of the property with a little A/C unit and power. Maybe great for painting and some quiet time both with (and separate from) my pack of kids? But it was a disaster, full of beer cans etc from the previous owner.
I had a nurse friend who made beautiful beaded lanyards and sold them at work, it sounded like fun, so I got my pre-teen twins some beads for Christmas. Within a week, I was so hooked that I wouldn't let them touch their beads and I had wrecked our dining room with all my projects that I was already getting orders for! My husband of 21 years cleaned out the outbuilding (bless him!), renamed it the "Studio," and sent me packing. It is now FULL of thousands of beads, gemstones, fancy tools, and sheet metal. It has a new sliding glass door to let in the light and an iPod dock. I spend every spare minute down there, and split my time between my basic jewelry shop hillcountrysilver.etsy.com and this one. I recently began metal stamping in earnest and enjoy making Mommy Necklaces in addition to Medical IDs. My techniques continue to improve and evolve. I am pretty much self-taught (do jewelry magazines count?), so tend to think outside the box. I am so fortunate to have a place besides craft shows to sell my jewelry! It keeps me creative and loving life here on Etsy!
Thanks for checking me out! I often "check out" my customers and potential customers during the many convos it usually requires to finalize an item as important as a medical ID. Sorry it took me a year and a half to share my own info! If you have a question, convo me. I'm very convo-friendly and enjoy the entire process (well, maybe not the bill paying part) of creating custom items. I spend most of my time in my other shop (way busier there!) except for the convos, so will answer you as soon as I get a moment!
