Hope Lehan's Profile
While studying art I fell in love with wood block printing.
Many of my subjects and materials are pulled from the natural world and my passion for nature. I tend to focus on rare animals that exhibit unique behavioral and physical qualities.
About the process. . . I sketch the image on birch plywood and then carve out the negative areas around the image to create the block. When printing, I start with prepping the paper for the block. The image is printed on handmade rice paper that has been brushed with color to harmonize the image. Next, I ink the block with an high-quality oil based ink. Once inked, I transfer the image with a wooden spoon on to paper and the process is complete.
