Kate Boyce's Profile

About

House of Chintz is the design label of me Kate Boyce. I was born in Staffordshire and now live and work in Hebden Bridge West Yorkshire. I studied Surface Pattern at Staffordshire University then spent several years designing fabric and giftware for industry.
Then came a change - I moved to the country, got married and had two lovely daughters. I could never give up working but wanted to move away from stringent briefs and ‘chintzy’ floral designs and so motivated by my surroundings I began instead creating and selling mixed-media paintings on canvas.

This venture thankfully proved successful for me and I was able to work at home whist bringing up my daughters.

Then after a while I found myself strangely drawn back to the chintz - pattern began appearing in my paintings in some way. I often arrive at ideas by playing about with images on the computer and I was doing just that one time when I realised that rather than being an idea for a painting I had a design that was just crying out to be a lampshade! I realised that I was never going to be one to confine myself to one line of work so I decided to divide my time between design and painting.

English landscape and pattern are my main inspirations. My lampshades are inspired by the suburban landscape I grew up in. My own photography and vintage floral fabric of the 70’s and 80’s are starting points for my designs. The lampshades are handmade in my studio.

As well as here on etsy my shades are sold at Hannah Nunns wonderful shop Radiance:
